Android Setup Guide¶
Configure QuietNet DNS on your Android device to block ads and trackers system-wide.
DNS over TLS Setup (Android 9+)¶
Android natively supports DNS over TLS (DoT) from Android 9 (Pie) onwards.
Step 1: Get Your DNS Information¶
- Log in to your QuietNet dashboard
- Go to the Blocklists section
- In the "Your DNS Settings" card, note your DoT settings:
- IP Address:
103.107.50.10
- SNI:
YOUR_API_TOKEN.quietnet.app
Step 2: Configure Private DNS¶
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced
- Tap Private DNS (on some devices, this might be under More Connection Settings)
- Select Private DNS provider hostname
- Enter your SNI:
YOUR_API_TOKEN.quietnet.app
- Tap Save or Apply
Step 3: Verify Connection¶
- Return to your home screen
- Open your browser and visit a website
- Check if ads are being blocked
- For a more thorough verification, see our verification guide
DNS over HTTPS Setup (Using Apps)¶
While Android doesn't natively support DNS over HTTPS (DoH), you can use third-party apps.
Option 1: Using the 1.1.1.1 App¶
The Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app allows you to use custom DNS servers:
- Install 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet from the Play Store
- Open the app and follow the initial setup
- Tap on the menu (three lines) in the top-left corner
- Go to Settings > Connection options
- Enable Custom DNS server
- Enter your DoH URL:
https://dns.quietnet.app/YOUR_API_TOKEN/dns-query
- Go back and tap Connect to enable the VPN
Option 2: Using Intra¶
Google's Intra app provides DoH support:
- Install Intra from the Play Store
- Open the app
- Tap on the settings icon (gear) in the top-right corner
- Tap Select DNS server
- Choose Custom server
- Enter your DoH URL:
https://dns.quietnet.app/YOUR_API_TOKEN/dns-query
- Tap the back arrow
- Tap Connect to start the VPN
Option 3: Using PersonalDNSFilter¶
For more advanced users:
- Install PersonalDNSFilter from the Play Store
- Open the app
- Go to Settings
- Under DNS Configuration, select DNS Server Configuration
- Add your DoH URL:
https://dns.quietnet.app/YOUR_API_TOKEN/dns-query
- Go back and tap Start
Troubleshooting¶
Private DNS Won't Connect¶
- Ensure you've entered the SNI hostname correctly
- Some Android manufacturers customize settings locations - search for "Private DNS" in settings
- Some public Wi-Fi networks block custom DNS - try using mobile data
- Try restarting your device
App-Based Solutions Issues¶
- Make sure you've granted the app VPN permissions
- Check that battery optimization is disabled for the DNS app
- Some VPN apps conflict with DNS apps - disable other VPNs
- If using a custom ROM, ensure it supports VPN services
Ads Still Appearing¶
- Some apps have built-in ads that bypass DNS filtering
- YouTube ads often use the same domains as video content
- Check your blocking statistics in the dashboard
Next Steps¶
- Verify your setup is working correctly
- Configure your blocklists to customize your filtering
- Set up QuietNet on your other devices
